Sonic is here! :-)

Sonic is finally in St. Paul! Wahoo! Last week, Mark told me it looked like Sonic was open. So, I thought I'd run to Sonic yesterday to get me an ex-long cheese coney. It was around 2pm yesterday and I thought it probably won't be too busy. Boy, was I wrong! A police officer was directing people to go up the road instead of turning into Sonic. Then, I saw "Sonic Staging Area" signs and followed them. Basically, it was a car waiting area to go to Sonic. I think I was in the car waiting area for 45 minutes. There was a guy going to each car giving out menus and putting a “Sonic” sign under their car windshield. I talked to him and he said that today was their opening day. I did pick the wrong day to go, but oh well. So, when it was my turn to go to Sonic the police officer let me in because I had the “Sonic” sign under my car windshield. I did get my ex-long cheese coney and it was delicious! It’s great to finally have a Sonic in the area (about a 15-20 minute drive for me). See, it’s the little things in life that make me happy! :-)

Happy 4th Anniversary

Today (6-5-08) is our 4th wedding anniversary. If you ask me (Jonay), it doesn't seem like it's been 4 years! Which, I guess, is a good thing? I am truly blessed to be married to such a wonderful guy!

Mark's family does a make-your-own-birthday/anniversary-card thing. So, we made anniversary cards for each other. I scanned them in and thought I'd post them to the blog. I suppose they need a little explaining. FYI...you might have to click on the pictures in order to read them.

Mark to Jonay anniversary card: we learned a saying from Mark's friend Paul that we now say a lot....."I hear you cluckin' big chicken". So, here's the outside of the card:
Here's the inside of the card:
Jonay's card to Mark: There is another saying around here.....one person will say "if (something) has taught you nothing else"....the other person will say "and it hasn't".....the 1st person will then say "it's that.....blah blah blah". I used that on the outside of my card.

Mark and I were in his parents van in Milwaukee (I think) and "God Bless the USA" was playing and I pretended to do a cymbal crash with my fake cymbals in hand, but I was just a little ahead of the actual cymbal in the song. Mark and I laughed and laughed about it. It was funny.....because I was so serious about it! So, I then wrote this on the inside of the card:

Job search news

Well, I had 2 interviews for an Office Support job in May, but I found out yesterday (6-4-08) that I didn’t get the job. I was disappointed to find that out because it sounded like a job I would have really liked. So, I was a little down yesterday (but tried to remain positive). I really, really dislike going on job interviews (who does like job interviews?). However, I have found 2 books that are very helpful (I’ve read one and have started the other one): “101 Greatest Answers to the Toughest Interview Questions” and “101 Smart Questions to Ask on Your Interview” (by Ron Fry). After receiving the rejection letter yesterday, my mind started going over all my past failures, dwelling on “why didn’t I get this job”, and the fact that I’m right back at square one now.

I was then reminded of a principle from a BSF lesson from this year: God’s plan will always be fulfilled no matter how deep the defeat appears to be! We were studying Matthew 27:32-66 (Christ’s crucifixion, death, & burial). To everyone around during Christ’s trial/crucifixion/death/burial, it appeared that Jesus’ claims were being disproved. However, God’s plan was moving forward even though it appeared everything was going against God’s plan. For through Christ’s trial/crucifixion/death/burial (AND don’t forget the resurrection that followed)…..God’s plan of redemption was fulfilled. As the teaching leader pointed out, this gives us some insight into God’s sovereignty. God is still purposefully working! So, again I repeat: God’s plan will always be fulfilled no matter how deep the defeat appears to be! I don’t know about you, but that brings comfort to me! I then started thinking about the lessons I can learn from my failures (for God to show me the lessons)…..like how I could’ve answered some of the interview questions differently/better. I’m sure this will help me with my next set of interviews.

I was also encouraged when Mark mentioned about the time when he interviewed for a job at a place in Woodbury, MN….he thought the interview went great, but he didn’t get the job. Then, when he interviewed for the company he works for now……he thought the interview went bad, but he got the job. After some time, the 1st place he interviewed with closed their location. So, in hindsight, it was best that he didn’t get the 1st job. Only after getting the 2nd job did he realize that the “bad” interview was a way of weeding out people who didn’t fit the job. So, it’s all in God’s hands! :-)

Okay, and this is the part that I think is just totally awesome! God clearly spoke to me today…when I needed it! Today, June 5, I read in “Our Daily Bread” the following….it fits so appropriately:

Scripture: Psalm 42
1 As the deer pants for the water brooks, so pants my soul for You, O God.
2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God?
3 My tears have been my food day and night, while they continually say to me, “Where is your God?”
4 When I remember these things, I pour out my soul within me. For I used to go with the multitude; I went with them to the house of God, with the voice of joy and praise, with a multitude that kept a pilgrim feast.
5 Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him for the help of His countenance.
6 O my God, my soul is cast down within me….
8 The LORD will command His lovingkindness in the daytime, and in the night His song shall be with me – a prayer to the God of my life.
9 I will say to God my Rock, “Why have You forgotten me? Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?”
10 As with a breaking of my bones, my enemies reproach me, while they say to me all day long, “Where is your God?”
11 Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God: for I shall yet praise Him, the help of my countenance and my God.

“A Graduation Wish” (corresponding story to the scripture):
The high school commencement speaker was the president of a large corporation. He was chosen for the occasion because of his success. Yet his speech came with a most unusual wish for the graduates.

The speaker told the students sitting before him in their graduation gowns, “If I could have one hope for you as you go out into the world, it would be this: I hope you fail. I hope that you fail at something that is important to you.” He went on to say how his own early life had been one failure after another, until he learned to see failure as an effective teacher.

Many of the songs of Israel were born in seasons of failure. Out of desperation came the cry, “As the deer pants for the water brooks, so pants my soul for You, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God” (Ps. 42:1-2).

Sometimes we are not ready to see the wonder of God’s wisdom and strength until we are gasping for breath in the exhaustion of our own strength.

A recurring story of the Bible is that mountains of faith rise from the valleys of failure. Before discovering the high ground we are looking for, we may need to see the failure of the dreams we hold in our hearts and trust instead in the love, wisdom, and guidance of our God. – Mart De Haan

The lessons we learn from our failures
Are lessons that help us succeed,
And if we are wise and we heed them,
Then failure is just what we need. – D. De Haan

“Learn from your failures, or you will fail to learn.”

I know that God never fails me! -Jonay

Videos from May 2008 Colorado Trip

This has got to be one of my favorite videos! This is hilarious!

"How to eat a gigantic donut" (as narrated by Mark)

Emma is describing a play and that her momma laughed. Very cute!

Nana pushes Emma on her swing set.

Uncle Mark gives Emma horse ride in Estes Park, CO.

I love to hear kids laugh....Emma laughs as Papa tries to get her arm.

Trip to Colorado May 2008

Mark and I took a vacation to South Carolina (a separate post below) and then, instead of flying back to Minneapolis/St. Paul, we flew to Denver, CO and spent some days with Mark's brother Jay, his wife Shelli, & daughter Emma. We then drove back to Wisconsin with Mark's parents (Fritz & Judy). Here's some pictures of our visit in Colorado.

Emma sporting her sunglasses (reflecting me taking the picture in the left lens & Shelli in the right lens):
Shelli booked a Tea Luncheon for the girls. Here is Shelli's mom (Barb), Emma, and Shelli in the tea room.
Emma has some blueberry tea.
All tuckered out! Emma didn't make it to dessert. She was tired!
Jonay & Shelli at "Texas Roadhouse". They have (by far) the best rolls and cinnamon butter! My mouth waters just thinking about the rolls/butter!
The table is turned....Mark usually gets Sky/Mak/Emma's ears....but Emma is getting Uncle Mark's ears here. Too cute....and I think Mark likes it!
Emma loves to give a hug and then lay there like this. Mark is giving Emma a good night hug.
Fritz & Jay built a sandbox (with a lid that closes) for Emma to play in.
Brent & Liz (Shelli's brother & sister-in-law) brought over Ladder Golf to play at Jay's b-day celebration. It's a fun game of tossing a rope with a golf ball on each end and trying to wrap the rope around any one of the 3 different bars to get points. The top bar is worth 3 points, middle bar worth 2 points, and lowest bar worth 1 point. Mark and Fritz were the champs for the night. They went into 4 OT's with Eustus (sp?) and Jay.
Cute picture of Emma. She loves (and I mean loves) to swing!
Emma with birthday boy Jay.

Jay, Emma, & Papa.
On the way back to Wisconsin, we stopped to eat at Whiskey Creek in Nebraska (Fritz & Judy are at bottom of picture). Good steaks!
A few pictures once we got back to Wisconsin:
When Mark was a wee-one.....he would put his blanket corner in his ear. We caught Makena doing the same thing here.
Uncle Mark takes Skylar & Makena on a ride.
Makena relaxed on her bed!

Trip to South Carolina May 2008

Mark and Jonay were able to spend some time with Jonay's family in South Carolina (Ray/Carolyn flew from Kansas, Mike/Kristi drove from the D.C. area, and we flew from Minneapolis/St. Paul). We stayed with Jonay's Aunt Verna Mae and Uncle Jerry. Here's some pictures and videos from the trip. We played a lot of "3 to 13" cards and Mexican Train!

I do have to tell one funny story from when we were all in South Carolina in 2005 and my nephew Daniel was there too. Daniel had been out on the jet skies a lot without any sunscreen on and he was fried! My cousin Junior asked Daniel "why didn't you put sunscreen on" while Daniel was putting some Aloe Vera gel on his sunburn and Daniel quickly said "sunscreen is for sissies" and my cousin Junior came right back at Daniel with "that stuff there you're putting on is for sissies". We all got a good laugh out of that comment! Too funny!

Left to right: Jonay, Mark, Ray, Carolyn, Aunt Verna Mae, Mike, Uncle Jerry, & Kristi

Jerry & Verna Mae sitting in Clemson rocking chairs outside the Cracker Barrel.
Kristi, Mike, Jerry, & Verna Mae inside Cracker Barrel.
Jonay & Mark inside Cracker Barrel.
I can't remember how this got started, but whoever is the last person with their thumbs up at the table, has to say the prayer before the meal. Somehow, Mike was always the 1st person at the table with his thumbs up....so Mark took a picture.
Jerry & Verna Mae have a place on Lake Hartwell in South Carolina. The lake is way down as you can see in this picture. Their dock isn't even in the water! Mark and I were able to take a jet ski ride anyway. Pray for rain in South Carolina!
We went to the Beacon Drive-In in Spartanburg, SC. http://www.beacondrivein.com/ On down is a video of Jerry placing our order & the guy "calling" it out.
Mark liked how this guy was dressed for traveling at the airport. It is quite funny when you think about it!

A video of Jerry & Verna Mae's dog "Trouble" trying to see what's going on. I then scan everyone at the table. At the end you see "Trouble" and "Scooter" (their other dog).

Some cute videos from May 2008

Makena on Aunt Jon"nay's" back:

Mak jumping on bubble wrap. Towards the end of the video, you can hear Skylar say "look at Nana go" and then some good laughs. I believe Nana was opening some of her Mother's Day presents when Skylar made that comment. Too funny!

Sky came to Aunt Jonay and Uncle Mark's house for the afternoon (to be the "whole cheese") and it was nice enough to go outside. Skylar had fun with the bubbles and kept saying "I'm glad it's springtime and not winter".
